Emmory is a bright, eager thirteen-year-old with an enormous smile and a love for singing who happens to have an illness called tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). As Emmory has grown, Marc and Marla Shapses have struggled with the complexities of TSC and the enormous challenge of raising a daughter with special needs. Emmory was misdiagnosed for the first four months of her life. At the age of three, she underwent risky brain surgery in an effort to better control her multiple daily seizures. Ordinary life in the Shapses household includes countless doctor visits, MRI’s and ever-changing medications. Even with all the medical challenges, educating Emmory is the main focus for the Shapses family. They struggle to find a program that recognizes and builds upon Emmory’s many strengths and talents while addressing the unique challenges she faces. The Shapses family has been working full-time for years now to find the program that will unlock Emmory’s potential. As they continue their quest to provide the best opportunities for Emmory, they also remain committed to the overall battle, to find a cure for TSC and to improve the lives of all those affected. |
